Ever wanted to send a regular newsletter without lifting a finger? Here’s how you can build a fully automated email newsletter using:

  • Python

  • Gmail

  • GitHub Actions

Tools You’ll Need

  • A Gmail account (preferably a new one)

  • Basic knowledge of Python

  • A GitHub account

Step 1: Set Up Gmail

  1. Create a new Gmail account.

  2. Enable “Less secure apps” to allow login via script.

  3. Store your email and password securely in a .env file (we’ll cover that next).

Step 2: Prepare Your Python Script

  1. Create a folder called automated-newsletter/

  2. Inside it, create two files:

    • .env – for your credentials

    • newsletter.py – for the script

.env file format:

env
EMAIL_ADDRESS=youremail@gmail.com
EMAIL_PASSWORD=yourpassword

⚠️ Important: Never commit .env to GitHub!

Step 3: Install Required Libraries

bash
pip install python-dotenv

Step 4: Write the Python Script

Here’s a full working version of the script:

python
import os
import smtplib
from email.mime.multipart import MIMEMultipart
from email.mime.text import MIMEText
from dotenv import load_dotenv

# Load email credentials
load_dotenv()
email_address = os.getenv("EMAIL_ADDRESS")
email_password = os.getenv("EMAIL_PASSWORD")

# Create email content
html_content = """\
<html>
<body>
<h2>Today’s Kite Forecast 🪁</h2>
<p>Wind speed is looking good! Time to hit the waves.</p>
</body>
</html>
"""

text_content = "Today’s Kite Forecast 🪁\nWind speed is looking good! Time to hit the waves."

# Subscriber emails
subscriber_emails = ["example1@gmail.com", "example2@gmail.com"]

# Send emails
with smtplib.SMTP_SSL("smtp.gmail.com", 465) as server:
server.login(email_address, email_password)

for recipient in subscriber_emails:
msg = MIMEMultipart("alternative")
msg["Subject"] = "WindSiren Forecast"
msg["From"] = email_address
msg["To"] = recipient

part1 = MIMEText(text_content, "plain")
part2 = MIMEText(html_content, "html")
msg.attach(part1)
msg.attach(part2)

server.sendmail(email_address, recipient, msg.as_string())

Step 5: Automate with GitHub Actions

  1. Create the following folder structure:

.
├── .github
│ └── workflows
│ └── newsletter.yml
  1. Paste this into newsletter.yml:

yaml
name: Send Newsletter

on:
schedule:
- cron: '15 7 * * *' # Runs daily at 7:15 AM
workflow_dispatch:

jobs:
send:
runs-on: ubuntu-latest
steps:
- name: Checkout repo
uses: actions/checkout@v3

- name: Set up Python
uses: actions/setup-python@v4
with:
python-version: '3.x'

- name: Install dependencies
run: pip install python-dotenv

- name: Run newsletter script
env:
EMAIL_ADDRESS: ${{ secrets.EMAIL_ADDRESS }}
EMAIL_PASSWORD: ${{ secrets.EMAIL_PASSWORD }}
run: python newsletter.py

  1. Go to your GitHub repo → Settings → Secrets and variables → Actions → New repository secret.

Add:

  • EMAIL_ADDRESS

  • EMAIL_PASSWORD
